Future of the Indian Navy

Up to 1 Vishal ???
(Vishal). Up to 65 000 tons, 260 meters (likely pure Indian indeginously design, derived/enlarged from the Vikrant design, but in CATOBAR configuration). Originaly scheduled to be commissioned by 2018 (with a second ship by 2024 ?). But current economic & technical problems are now delaying the project by severals years......as usual...wait & see...

Up to 1 Vikrant
(Vikrant), 40 000 tons, 252 meters (Indian design with help from Italian shipyard) STOBAR carrier. These construction suffered from initial problems/delays, mainly due to Indian industry shorthcoming. To be commissioned by 2014, with probably 35+ years of service, to be retired by late 2040's.

Up to 1 Vikramaditya
(Vikramaditya), 44 000 tons, 283 meters (former 1980's Ex-Soviet Admiral Gorshkov carrier). Extensively rebuild (2,3 $ billion......yeah...a big joke...) for Indian service. To be commissioned by late 2012, with probable +/- 20 years of further service expected, to be retired during 2030’s.

1 Viraat
(Viraat), 23/28 000 tons, 226 meters (former Ex-British HMS Hermes, built by late 1940’s/1950’s). Extensively refited but fully obsolete, to be retired by 2018...

Up to 4 Type 15B
(Not yet named). Up to 7000 tons (improved design from Type 15B Kolkata, likely with phased array radar, and change in superstructure, for a much more stealthier design). Likely to be commissioned by 2018/2020 and to remain in service until +/- 2050.

Up to 3 Type 15A
(Kolkata, Kochi, Chennai). 6800 tons, 163 meters (improved design from Type 15 Delhi DDG). Commissioned by 2012/2014, with probable +/- 30 year of life, to be retired by mid 2040’s.

3 Type 15
(Delhi, Mysore, Mumbai). 6200 tons, 163 meters (first major indeginously Indian warship). Commissioned by 1997/2001, to remain in service until early 2030’s.

5 Rajput
(Rajput, Rana, Ranjit, Ranvir, Ranvijay). 4000+ tons, 147 meters (Russian Kashin design of early 1960’s). Commissioned by 1980/1988, with probable +/- 30 year of life, to be retired through 2010’s and replaced by the Type 15 A/B DDG’s.

Frigates
Up to ? Shivalik (Type 17)
(Shivalik, Satpura, Sahyadri, others not yet named). 5500 tons, 142 meters. A first batch of 5 ships likely to be commissioned by 2010/2012. A second batch (improved design ?) of 7 ships by 2015/2020.

(Talwar, Trishul, Tabar). 3800 tons, 124 meters (Russian 11356 Frigate design). Commissioned by 2003/2004, to remain in service until early 2030’s. A further group of 3 and slightly improved ships (Teg, Tarkash, Trikand) expected to be commissioned by 2011/2012 and to remain in service until early 2040’s.

3 Brahamaputra (Type 16A)
(Brahamaputra, Betwa, Beas). 3800 tons, 126 meters (Indian design derived from Godavari FFG). Commissioned by 2000/2005, to remain in service until mid 2020’s.

3 Godavari (Type 16)
(Godavari, Ganga, Gomati). 3600 tons, 126 meters (Indian design derived from the British Leander FF design). Commissioned by 1983/1988, with probable +/- 30 year of life, to be retired through 2010’s and replaced by some Shivalik FFG’s.

1 Nilgiri
(Taragiri). 2800 meters, 113 meters (improved design from British Leander FF class). Commissioned by 1980, to be retired very soon (2011/2012).

  2. nice analysis, but should include 45 mig 29k/KUB , 12 boing p8i(+ option of 12),MRNH deal of aprroximate 90 ,that will take upto 500 aircrafts, project 17A frigates(7)
